The Maltese Falcon is the best known of Dashiell Hammit’s Sam Spade novels. Published in 1930, it was made into a movie of the same name in 1941 starring Humphrey Bogart). Plot summary:

“In 1539, the Knights Templar of Malta paid tribute to Charles V of Spain by sending him a Golden Falcon encrusted from beak to claw with rarest jewels — but pirates seized the galley carrying this priceless token and the fate of the Maltese Falcon remains a mystery to this day.”

I have not read the book or seen the movie.

The Maltese Monkee was an episode of both Richie Rich and Ghostbusters TV shows. I haven’t seen either of them.

Maltese cat is a name that is often given to any cat, whose fur is either completely, or primarily, gray or blue and is of indeterminate breed. Many cats with such colouration are supposedly present on the island of Malta, which may have given rise to the use of the adjective in this context.

I didn’t see any cats in Malta.
