Can We Guess Your Age Based on the Words You Use?

Very simple quiz this week:

  • Click on Begin Game in the blue box
  • Pick which word or phrase you are most likely to use (or were most likely to use back in the day….)
  • Continue doing this
  • Scroll down and click on Skip when you get an advertisement instead of a question
  • Continue on

My results were very accurate “You Are in Your 40s or 50s.”

Goodreads’ Top 100 Literary Novels of All Time – How many have you read?

That’s “literary” as in “not classifiable by genre.” Sure, you can call “Pride and Prejudice” chick-lit, but that’s probably not what Jane Austen was intending.

I got four stars for having read 20. Included are a couple of my favorite books of all time (The House of Mirth and East of Eden), a couple of books I struggled to complete (Confederacy of Dunces and The Scarlet Letter) and a few books I’ve started to read and given up on.

What really surprised me about the list is how many titles (especially on page 3) I didn’t even recognize. I’ve been the adult librarian at a branch where “literary fiction” is the second top category read by adults for four years! The only category more popular is “narrative nonfiction”.

How Much Do You Know About Halloween?

Halloween is marked every year on 31st October with a variety of traditions.

The celebration goes back centuries and has roots in the Gaelic festival of Samhain.

The Celtic beliefs in the closeness of the worlds of the living and the dead on the day of Samhain are reflected in references to the dead and the supernatural.

Treat-or-treating, parades and ghost tours are popular around Halloween, when our fascination with the paranormal is piqued.

But how much do you know about the origins and traditions associated with Halloween?

Rock Star Arrests

Trashing rooms, indecent exposure, drugs busts…getting arrested is practically a rite of passage for any musician at some point in their careers. We want to see how well you remember these infamous rock star run-ins with the law. Just match the scandal to the correct offender!

You get 10 seconds to answer each question, your results will include both the number you get correct and a score based on how quickly you selected correct answers.

The myths of air travel – can you sort fact from fiction?

I was very relieved that I was able to find a quiz to post this week! Since it’s hard to escape all the negativity going on, I really don’t want to add a quiz about it here. I even learned a couple of things from this weeks quiz

Some of these are common misconceptions, while others are strange but true. Can you spot fact from fiction?

Click here to take this quiz and see if you can beat my score of 10 out of 15. (I missed #1, #5, #6, #9 and #14.)

Is Your OCD Radar Sensitive Enough To Notice The Most Subtle Differences?

This week’s quiz is from the website Sun Gazing which has nothing to do with staring into the sun. Actually, based on a brief review, I have no idea what this website is…After taking this quiz,  I skimmed the about page; from the stated mission I expected deeper content. This was actually a relief. If I found this quiz on an authoritative website I might be worried by my results.

While only a doctor can determine and diagnose you with OCD, there are other ways to explore and see how OCD you may be. This quiz is one of them. It looks at how your eyes, brain, and mind evaluate certain images and examines how you experience different levels of disorder. If you don’t have OCD then practically all of the shapes that follow in this quiz will appear to be identical. Even so, one of them is different in either shape, color, or position, so try your eyes at it now and see how sensitive your OCD radar is!

The Monkees

Last week I couldn’t find a quiz worth posting. Although some weeks the quiz isn’t that interesting or fun, I do try to find a quiz that isn’t depressing, trivial (“Which Pokémon Are You?”) or requires knowledge of any sport (except baseball). This week it was easy. Last Monday, Jimmy (my wonderful husband) informed me that it was the 50th Anniversary of ‘The Monkees’ TV debut and that I should post a quiz about that. I decided to post two….

The Monkees posing with one of the two statues their show won at the 1967 Emmys

First up, from  Lancaster Online, is a ten question quiz, “How well do you know the Monkees”, that includes some very obscure facts . Click here to take it. I only got five correct (50%).

Microsoft Entertainment posted a thirteen question quiz, “The Monkees: What’s the next lyric?”  I did a bit better on this one, 7 out of 13 (54%), but missed some lyrics to songs I thought were ingrained in my brain. Click here to take this quiz.

Star Trek At Fifty

This week’s quiz is from CNET.

Star Trek is as expansive as the universe itself. With six television series (and one on the way) and 13 feature films in the canon, it’s hard to know everything there is to know about the sci-fi franchise. The quiz spans a galaxy, from the exploits of Captain Kirk in the original series to the upcoming “Star Trek: Discovery” show due in 2017.

Click here to take the quiz. You will probably do better than I.  After guessing wrong on the first 13 questions,  I finally guessed one correctly.  Then I actually knew an answer and obtained the score of 2 out of 15.

In 1967 I had numerous nightmares starring the Gorn and have avoided Star Trek, as much as possible, ever since.
